Past Life Regression: Is It Real? Does It Work?

Past life regression (PLR) is a highly controversial subject in the field of therapy. In one camp are its often fanatical detractors, who regard PLR as a method used by unscrupulous amateurs to rob and deceive the gullible masses. On the other hand, the "true believers" of PLR have written volumes of data about the subject, in an effort to prove both the existence of past lives and the necessity of "clearing" past life memories from the subconscious mind. Unfortunately, in the frequently heated debate about whether past lives are "real", there is one question that is rarely asked: is PLR as effective in helping people to solve their everyday problems and improve their lives as other short-term interventions? This article will concern itself largely with this critical question, which is perhaps more important in the long run for PLR to become a proven therapeutic system than proving the "reality" of past lives.

Clearing Past Life Trauma

One of the best known forms of PLR is working with traumatic memories from past lives. We use this method for discovering the source in the subconscious mind of an emotional or physical problem. Or we can look at the source of a core belief in the client’s subconscious mind which is limiting their success in life. Some examples could include a phobic reaction such as a fear of entering the water, not explained by any present life experience, or a pain or disease which a client was born with, or a limiting core belief that "anyone I love will always abandon me." The procedure for accessing these memories is simple, and is often quite effective whether the client believes in past lives or not. We simply use a standard induction technique combined with instructions that the subconscious mind will now take us to the source of the client’s presenting problem. The hard part, which requires substantial training, is to know what to do when the memories emerge.

Contact Past Life Creative Abilities

In our first article I pointed out that PLR experiments by researchers like Helen Wambach, in her ground-breaking text Reliving Past Lives have proven the historical reality of past lives for a significant number of trance subjects. If, therefore, as current research indicates, many of us have lived on the earth for millennia, we could have developed numerous creative abilities over the centuries. It’s even possible that what we call “innate talents” such as those exhibited by great composers and artists is a result of subconscious memories of abilities developed in former lives. Wouldn’t you like to know what abilities may lie untapped in your subconscious mind?

Past Life Karma

For centuries the advanced religions of the east and the writings and teachings of innumerable spiritual masters have taught that the patterns of suffering or fortune we experience are the direct result of the "karma" (good or evil deeds) we have accumulated in past lives. This philosophical perspective is possibly the only way one can reconcile one’s belief in the existence of an omnipotent creator with compassion for all His/Her creations with the vast realms of suffering, especially of innocent children, in our world. But for many the word "karma" is far more than a mere philosophy. Many clients of PLR therapy have seen horrific and often unsolicited visions of terrible things they have done to others. And they have seen these visions when searching in the subconscious mind for the cause of their present life problems.

Clearing Past Life Contracts

According to many PLR researchers, most of us maintain relationships across a number of sequential lives. Some even claim that souls travel in family groups in which one’s father in one life may be a son or daughter in another. Since we often choose similar facial features from one life to another, it’s not unusual according to this theory to meet a number of people in our lives who in our first meeting seem strangely familiar. This is an aspect of the familiar déjà vu experience. I recall once when I first moved to California, seeing a stranger and having the distinct impression that I had known her before and even been married to her. Too embarrassed to approach her, I looked away. Minutes later she approached me and asked where we had known each other. I said I wasn’t sure, but I felt we had been married. She replied: “I know!” I could give many similar examples from both my personal and professional life. For most of us these experiences are a mere curiosity. But for some people it is of critical importance to discover the nature of these past relationships. That’s because sometimes the subconscious memories of this past history interfere with ones present happiness within a relationship. I call these patterns “past life contracts.”

Clearing Preconception Contracts

Many clients come to my office wanting to know why certain patterns of suffering seem to persist in their lives despite their best efforts to be different. These could include chronic illness, relationship problems, continuing financial struggles, and many other painful personal challenges that just don’t go away. Others come to me because they are seeking some destiny or purpose in their lives. For these clients, exploring the preconception contract can be very helpful.
